Among these statues are those of Salvador Allende, Simón Bolívar, and Benito Juárez. In this splendid avenue, known by Cubans as Calle G, there is a great monument to José Miguel Gómez, the second president of Cuba; and another one dedicated to Tomás Estada Palma, its predecessor, who was considered like a puppet of the USA, although of this statue only his shoes are left on a pedestal. In the north of the street G is the monument to Calixto García, a sculpture in honor to the brave Cuban general to which the military leaders of the USA prevented him to attend the Spanish surrender in 1898, in Santiago de Cuba. The statue represents the general on horseback, and is surrounded by 24 bronze plaques that tell the story of the struggle of Calixto for the independence of Cuba.
